“There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.” — Joseph Brodsky
Rating: 7.5/10"Keep your chin up. Eventually, you will meet someone who cares about your opinion. I'm so sorry I'm not her." "Sometimes I find things funny when they really, really aren't." "He's old and familiar and he is new and alive. Both. I feel it now. I feel everything." "I don't know what's real and what's fake anymore. I can't even trust my own eyes." | I have mixed feelings about this story. I've read all of Ally Carter's previous books, so I was expecting to like this new venture as well. And for the most part it didn't disappoint. However, I felt like it was missing something. It was almost like a prequel to the real story because not much real action happened. Plus when the meat of the "figuring things out" happened, I was confused for the majority of it. Then after that all happens, I finally realized what was going on. And I have to say, that wasn't a particularly pleasant way to read a story. I prefer not to be confused at all, but I am thankful I was clued in at some point. As for the romance, I wish there was more. I could see something coming with Grace and Alexei but it never seemed to get there or even get off the ground. I almost don't want to read the next in the series but I have so many unanswered questions that I feel like I'll have to. So I guess Carter actually did her job, didn't she?! Overall, I wouldn't say this book was bad. I just wasn't jumping up and down trying to finish it in one sitting or find out what was going to happen next. I did like the embassy storyline. It's an interesting world to me, and I enjoyed being able to dive into that life for a bit. |
