“Only a generation of readers will spawn a generation of writers.” ― Steven Spielberg
Rating: 7.5/10"Mrs. Martin, the school's human pumpkin of an attendance secretary." "Apparently his bombs killed more people than anyone else's bombs." "Like a Transformer, she was half car, half truck." "I tried wiggling my own stamp licker." "I have no friends in San Diego. I have people I party with... it's not the same thing." "I moistened Maureen's hand as well." | I'm not sure what I think about this book. It's not something I would typically read. But I am a huge fan of Veronica Mars, so anything Rob Thomas does, I like to give a chance to. Steve is hilarious. I'll give him that. Some of the things he said made me literally laugh out loud. But the story seemed to drag and not really have a clear plot. And I was pleased it came to a nice ending. But I did find myself wondering when the section would be over and if I was getting close to the end of the story. However, I didn't quite see Dub and Sky's thing ahead of time, so go Thomas for throwing in a surprise. I did like the alternating chapters. Like then and now. But I don't understand, after Steve figured out what his mother did, why he did start to hate her and still continued to hate his father (albiet a bit less than before). The small, modest wedding opened Steve's eyes a bit to his father, and made him realize he wasn't the big shot he always thought. His father did care. But it was almost too little too late to matter. All of the characters had depth and I loved the little things I recognized Thomas had reused in Veronica Mars like "Bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch..." and the name Wanda Varner, who, in Veronica Mars, was a lower-class kid who ran for student council president hoping to make a change to the 09er-run system. Anyway, back to Rats Saw God. It was deep but also lighthearted. It had meaning but was also just there. Overall, I think I've decided it was a solid OK. "I had no idea where I was going, but I was in a big hurry to get there." "It's how you deal with shit, what your first impulse is, that determines your personality—not whether you think country music sucks." |
