“Reading furnishes the mind only with materials of knowledge; it is thinking that makes what we read ours.” — John Locke
Rating: 7/10"I enter the kitchen and make a bee line for my favorite spot, the refrigerator." "He actually packed up her things and brought them with him, only to unpack them again." "I make such a big deal of small things." "I'll wait forever for her if I have to." | This story started out great. I love stories where there's a girl that changes a guy from his old usual ways and they make each other better. But the story just continued to drag on and on and onnnnn. I would have been happy with the conflict being Jesse unsure of falling for Luke because of what happened to her mother. It seemed like two stories in one and the actual "surprise" conflict of Luke making a mistake and going to prison was unnecessary. I actually ended up heavily skimming the end. From right before the boys were drafted to Tampa Bay until the end, I just reached out for the highlights (and lowlights, I guess, too). I just didn't feel like reading anymore because it didn't seem to be going anywhere. And I'm someone who likes when things end up perfect, like they're wrapped in a box with a bow on top and presented to the reader. Leaving things up in the air between Jesse and Luke with him in Prison and not being able to go after his dreams of being in the MLB was unfair. And Jesse didn't deserve that heartbreak either! And I so wanted something to happen between De and Mikey before the end, but nope. I didn't get that either. And I know it happens in the next book, but I'm not planning on reading it at this point. The only reason I'm not giving the story a lower rating is because the beginning and up until I did actually read, it was sweet. The chemistry between the two was undeniable and it was great that they started out really great friends. But I obviously can't go any higher with the rating because of all it's other faults. It left me wanting more (and less, if you look at it that way), which isn't really the feeling I want to get after reading a book. I'm OK with cliff hangers, but I wanted to be excited to read the next book — not feel like I have to to get the resolution I'm desperately seeking. I'll leave it on a positive note, one last thing I did like: Luke loves The Script, so I love Luke. |
